Went down to the allotments this morning, just to see how the dahlia's were doing for this Sat. Now the allotment association had asked the council to clear all the wood and rubbish from the 3 allotments at the back of us. When I arrived hey were clearing those allotments, burning all the wood etc, all the smoke was blowing across our allotments. Now all the blooms without covers, are all ruined with the fall out from the smoke, Brenda T and Mary's Jomanda etc very little chance now of having a entry in the 5 vase Championship now.

Does anyone know if it's nesasary to manure the plot for poms? Im lucky to live in the middle of nowhere surrounded by farms so muck isn't a problem but I remember reading somewhere not to manure where you plan to grow poms? Cheers

Be very careful using manure from a source you aren't sure of. Lot's of instances of crops ruined by animals feeding on grass etc that has been treated with herbicides.

Thankyou yes I will have to check that out, I know it's really old like black cheddar cheese but not sure about herbicides, have you herd about no manure For poms?

Cheers I've read that somewhere too captainmarkymark, but I can't remember where. Probably not really necessary to manure a pom plot but I mulch the whole of my allotments with manure now, some of it well-rotted some of it fresh. Come planting time there is not much difference between the two and I just pull the surface manure aside and dig a planting hole. About the end of June I will mulch with strawy manure, to retain moisture and provide a little feed when it rains. I've not had any problems with this method, even with poms, but I do grow those with around 50 flowering stems per plant. If the manure is really old then I don't see it doing much harm, but as Scrumpy said be aware of residual herbicides, especially Aminopyralid, which can ruin your season.

Will have to cut the number of varieties I grow next season. Still to decide what to grow for showing and what to keep for stock and seeds.
