Hi Raymond.......this is an observation, not a criticism..... I notice that you are choosing very new, untried varieties to start your showing career with? I remember when I was "rookie novice"....a certain member of this forum advised me to look at what had been winning in my local shows; pick tried and tested varieties....not too many at first as you will need to grow at least 6/8 plants to choose your final blooms from....especially if you don't have huge areas of growing space. I know there are lots of gorgeous varieties to choose from and it can be confusing....but you need the right varieties to win.... I agree with Lou, Raymond, Lou did very well indeed in her first season. New varieties are something you can try later, but you need to start with Dahlia's that have a proven track record. I'd hardly call Ryecroft Zoe, Winholme Diane and Mary's Jomanda new, untried varieties! As for Duncan Edwards, I was given a plant to try by a fellow allotment holder. It has been grown outside with no feed or extra water, just a mulch of shredded garden waste. Grown 5-up it was around 10-inches in diameter. However, the grower who gave me the plant grew at 5-up with loads of water and a weekly feed and had oversize blooms. Will grow it next year as despite some heavy rain in August it did not mark at all and didn't fade when the sun shone.

markb I was referring to" Jersie, as being my main variety.....etc".....we all know the worth of the others. Hi Lou what I mean is I am doing 6 to 8 in the three proven plus the Jersie. 15 miniatures all proven 5 of three different cultivars. then the front which will be 3s of different ones I want to try plus the odd single again all proven varieties but more for colour and impact display and if I get a good single bloom or vase of three then great. Need to try some med and large as see what I like and can grow well. Also indulge himself in the bi colours etc.... For me it's not about the winning just showing will be the experience and learning more about this fascinating flower. Point taken though

Point taken though Oh I am pleased you took my observations in the spirit they were intended Raymond. The written word is so easy to misconstrue! Just one more comment.....how many varieties are you hoping to show......you do seem to be planning to grow quite a lot? Finally.....never mind just showing for the experience.....there's nothing wrong with that initially......but.....you must be in it to win it!!! Aim for the top!!..... I'll shut up now

I'll shut up now Hi Lou I totally understand your point. Thank you for your comments and also Tel. I am planning to grow about 80 plants maybe up to 90 depends on the space and number of 40litre pots I do. Serious showing will be 45 of them. All three bloom per vase classes. I have never grown a single show variety except sir Alf that got hit by spider mites and got incinerated. I want to try my hand at a number and see what I actually like. As I am using the garden it must be in keeping with the theme got to many other nice plants and shrubs that I won't sacrifice yet ! Lol Everything will be new to me so taking a gamble on a new release does not daunt me, jersie is a beauty though and I do like cactus and semi cactus. I might drop winholm Diane in favour of a min Dec or waterlily. I might get more from that as no covers planned so far. Allotment might be the way forward if I look to bigger shows in the future but the waiting time in my borough is 4 to 6 years. All the very best Raymond
