Dad came round yesterday and had another look at my Dahlias, 'Oh somethings burnt that' as he looked at my Downham Royal bloom, it wasn't like that yesterday... erm that'll have been me then, I sprayed them last night, you said it was ok to spray them everywhere But not on the flowers... but... Hay hoe, So I've ruined all of them I guess said I. sigh...

I've sprayed my seedlings and the corner and some random squirts on nibbled leaves, I had to stop because it is too dark. Put some slug pellets down everywhere except the new manured beds. All a bit random by then as it was dark dark by then. Oh and tomorrow I'm planning on Vaselining my bloom stems which is something my Dad hasn't done before. We'll see but I am concerned about how near the bud to go, I'm worried that I might end up spoiling the blooms for example on my giants by putting it too close to the bud.
I've got to go see the Doctor tomorrow re. high blood pressure and HH was talking about it to the girls, don't stress Mummy out before the appointment, I think it was Fairy who suggested I think of Dahlias to de-stress, HH took one look at me and said 'er, no best not... better to avoid that one entirely' (or words to that effect).
He's right - we both know that.I place a ring of Vaseline roughly half way between the top pair of leaves and the flower bud, just as the bud is showing colour.

erm, I know that it is early but I wasn't 100% yesterday and after our day out, I've done a lot of sleeping, got up for dinner and ate a mouthful and went back to bed. Got up later watched a bit of tv and then went to bed before HH had actually gone to sleep which is a rarity. So I've ended up over banking my sleep hours and woken up. I going to be here for a bit and then go back to bed, rather than lie in bed wide awake, getting annoyed with myself and ending up getting up anyway.
I'll head back to bed in a bit. Well that's as much of a plan as I have.

Morning! Said I would go back to sleep. Sleep is only something that you do when you are not awake. just as long as you don't do it while driving

I spoke to my Dad yesterday on the phone last night and he's been checking on my dahlias for me and I wanted to find out how they were. In a car travelling home after a busy day out with 2 little girls asking how their dahlias are and what the weather was like back home. (Sunny - hmmm unlike here).
Dahlias have been tied and sprayed with something different than I have been using - so I'm guessing that means that the stuff that I have used isn't doing it's job at this time.
He really doesn't like Clearview Audrey, Clearview Jenny and Candy Jayne haven't provided any blooms yet to judge. He is disappointed with Nuland Josephine which is a variety that is a new one for us which he gave me a rooted cutting. He's binned almost all of this years first year seedlings up because he doesn't think that they are any good and he was very kind with his phrasiology but let's just say he hasn't seen anything spectaular - ok worth keeping of mine yet.
But re. seedlings and I told him this, I'm not expecting another Moonlight, I'm just excited to get a flower. That's it. I'm still very much a bit kid about dahlias in everything.
For me right now, it's a bit like being a parent, you have a long pregnancy and you look forward to seeing what comes out and you love them no matter how ugly they look. Dad knows what I'm like and whilst he is far more pragmatic, that whole Don't expect ANYTHING any good to grow and then you won't be disappointed ethos that he told me about and I do agree But
Even through the pouring rain and the swish of the windscreen wipers, when I said, well struggled to think of the words to describe how I feel, the excitement of not knowing -
I stopped and said, Well know what I mean about it all don't you?
"Yes" Came the reply.
I might be a big softy and rush around like a big kid, waiting outside the door of a sweetshop waiting for it to open but
Dad understands and I can see why he loves growing his seedlings. Yes he is competitive but push that all to one side because deep down that's not what he is searching for.
He's looking for another special dahlia and I hope he finds one.

We had had a nice night out, girls had had a bath and we are on that last bit of getting ready for bed which always seems to take the longest.
There's a frog! ? What do you mean, there's a frog?
There's a frog, I saw it move when I was cleaning my teeth...? ?
What do you mean you saw a frog? Where is the frog?
In the bathroom? What do you mean there is a frog in the bathroom?
There... ?
O
O, there is a frog in the bathroom.
ok?...?
HH took 1 look at the frog and said yes that is a frog and that he does spiders, wasps etc but he's not going to do frogs as well.
Managed to get him out but lots of excitement pre-bed time sleep... So there you go, one frog yesterday.
