Crushing any plant to help it absorb weedkiller does not work, a plant will shut down any damaged area so it will not take up weedkiller through crushed leaves. For weedkiller to have any affect on marestail you need to treat the growth before the fronds open. When open they have a waxy coating which prevents the absorbtion om chemicals. Nerene, you say marestail roots down to 30 to 40 feet, in fact roots of the plant have been seen in mines 30+ metres down. Yes this was most informative but I'm not sure I'd spot it before the fronds open! They just seem to be there all of a sudden and the little female spikes just stay that way. I am sure that, as someone said, if I just keep on eventually it will be weakened but I'll be even happier if the whole thing just retreats to 30m down!

To be honest, if you have a great deal of it, I would be inclined to spray it all weekly no matter what stage the plants are at.
