I am new and managed to post an introduction ok but I have just written a long piece about this shrub and inserted 3 pics but when I clicked "Create thread" I got a ProBoards "fatal error" message and lost the lot!!!!!Grrrrrrrrrrr!!!!! Does it happen often on here? This shrub is in a local park and in flower now. I should know what it is but I'm stuck. It's about 10' tall, and the flowers are about half an inch across, five petalled and scentless - it's so pretty I'd love to know what it is please?

I would think it is Prunus subhirtella.

I'll have a guess, is it a Common Hawthorn?

No caretaker - it's too early for hawthorn I think and it has no thorns. daitheplant, I've looked at your prunus online and that doesn't flower until April and is more pinkish where this is pure white. Plus, in the picture I found of prunus subhirtella it was (as you would expect) hanging down more like blossom does whereas mine are just separate small flowers. Anyone else want a guess? I can't believe it's anything too unusual or exotic if my local council has planted it! It's really not even in a park as such - they call it officially a recreation ground and it's somewhere I walk my dog occasionally, but I don't think it's self-seeded as there's more than one around the perimeter.

It looks a bit like a forsythia Nerene, that would flower about now , I have a yellow one and have not seen a white one before.

The flowers look like Magnolia Stellata, but I don't think they grow to 10'

Well I've googled it and you can get a white one and a pink one, so that's something I've learnt today! I have to say though that I haven't noticed any of the common yellow ones in flower yet, plus the pictures of forsythia look to have 4 petals rather than the 5 this plant has. I think the search goes on!

The flowers look like Magnolia Stellata, but I don't think they grow to 10' I'm afraid this is another red herring. I think they can easily grow that tall but the flowers are multi-petalled and have a rather lax habits and though very pretty are not the same as mine.

What I think I will do is snip a bit off and take it to a local nursery and see if they can identify it, and failing that maybe I could ask the parks dept. of the council!! I'm reassured that it's proving difficult to identify by other keen gardeners on here as I thought I must be an idiot not knowing what it was and would lose my credibility!

The flowers look a bit like Prunus Spinosa but that shouldn't be out yet and is spiny?

The flowers look a bit like Prunus Spinosa but that shouldn't be out yet and is spiny? I got quite excited about this suggestion as many of the pictures did look very similar and the stems were leafless when in flower but the stamens seem much longer than on my plant. I will also double check about the thorns, but I didn't see any. However it's tough, hardy plant and the sort of thing a council would use. Have to say though I haven't seen it in any other parks/recs I go to.

I definitely think it is a Prunus.

I can see what you mean but again all the images I can find show the flower with leaves not leafless stems but I will follow up the Prunus idea!
