We will just have to abuse you instead Funny thing, on a Royal Marines forum I use there is a thread about how different nicknames originated. some such as taff, Jock, Paddy, yorky are easily explained and also Dusty (Miller) Chalky (White) etc. I have seen explanations now for Bungy (Williams), Smudge (Smith) and a few others but why Chunky (Chambers) Practically everyone had a nickname that stuck with them even after they left the corps.

Taff, Taffy is actually an insult to the Welsh, Jim. it comes from a poem, written by an Englishman, "Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a thief". As for Smith, my stepfather and his father, being Smiths, were known as "spider". I went to school with a boy known as Chunky Williams, he was known as the boy with the pineapple whatsits, ( I`ve edited to keep it clean ).
