Seen an offer of 50 free gladioli in a magazine and wondering should I get them, at just the cost of p+p. Are they perennial, how pretty are they and are they easy to grow? I thought I'd ask the experts rather than reading stuff online which may or may not be accurate.
Thanks

First question. How are they free if you have to buy the magazine and pay p&p? They are beautiful flowers but they need to be lifted once the flowers have died back as they will not survive a very cold winter.

In this area they are gorgeous and really do stand straight and tall. Personally, I would only grow the dwarf ones as they fit better into a planting scheme.

I love gladioli. If you do get them stagger your planting every 2 weeks you will get a longer display rather than a one hit wonder.
I will be doing some this year not so many as previously as doing penstemons and monarda .
Plant them fairly deeply about 10cm or even a little more will help them get well anchored and come through straight.

Dai lol I was given the magazine (my neighbour subscribes to one, I subscribe to another, we swap them on a weekly basis) but you're right about the p+p lol
Raymond, like you I'll have penstemons this year so don't know if I really need gladioli too. Decisions Decisions

Decisions Decisions KC, that is even better. When they start growing make sure to stake them to prevent wind damage. Cherry, as a compatriot of Dame Edna you are biased, so unable to give UNbiased advice.
