We've used up our Nectar points on membership to the RHS and my Husband was happy for us to go as a family day out to see the National. He has mentioned it a couple of times but then yesterday he asked would it be worth going to anyway because by the weekend all the blooms will be dead and shrivelled up. I don't want to build the girls up to see the (joint) best dahlias Nationally only to have them look well past their best.
I can't pull them out of school so will it still be worth going on the Saturday? Especially after all the exhibitors and judges would have been long gone by then. (nb Understandably so considering the lack of sleep in the build up, travel and exhibiting itself).
Following on question, if exhibitors get their dahlias to last longer than 24 hours, how do you do it? Any tips would be very much appreciated. I worry about leaving a bloom over night. If it will go bad over night.
p.s. Being a Southerner Harrogate is a tad far for a family day out but the same applies, if the staging is mid week, is it worth a family trip at the weekend?

But Harrogate would have been, if it were closer. Friday 18th, Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September 2015. Well done Northerners. Looks like your shows give families the opportunity to inspire potential exhibitors of the future.

Hi Moonlight, As far as I am aware the main show exhibits at Wisley are dismantled on the Friday evening in preparation for the marquee being made available for the exhibition put on by members of the public. Therefore ther are no NDS members exhibits on show Saturday or Sunday.

All the shows are a long way from your neck of the woods Moonlight, so it is not such a dilemma. I think you would be looking at the cost of a family type (that is not too dear) hotel in the area. I love the show at Harrogate. It is quite breathtaking. I like the gardens at Wisley, but have not been to a show there. My comments may not be helpful as I don't show dahlias.

have a day out at shrewsbury show. scrumpy you're safe, way too far for us. Thanks for the info diggie and Cherry I'm just curious and I would like the girls to experience a little bit of what I did when I was little.
Think it is a lost opportunity, it would do good for them to get a wider range of people in, as most people work Monday - Friday.

I stay at Premier Inn. There are sometimes deals and you know what you are getting.

I was talking to my Mum about this yesterday (having a bit of a moan) but she pointed out that it is worth going to Wisley to go to see Wisley itself.
Fair point.
I'll bear the P. Inn suggestion in mind. Never know. Maybe one day.

Wisley is a great place to visit, never been to any of the flower shows, but for the gardens a must
