To be honest joysie it sounds to me like your gardener doesn`t like to do what he`s paid for, ie, weeding. What is the area like that you want plants for, please?

For a sunny spot, Phlox subulata (or creeping Phlox) is really useful and pretty. I have this and Thyme and Golden Marjoram look good. Buy growing Thyme in the supermarket, or variegated thyme in the garden centre. You could get them now, but the Phlox subulata is probably only available when it is coming into flower. Aubretia is another possibility, but that would probably not be available until the early spring.

Sounds a bit of a dodgy gardener I am not sure about shade plants, periwinkles are nice but can get out of hand...

Probably the Geranium would work as a ground cover. Mine certainly does. This can be pulled out if it gets too much, and it is better for being cut down when the main flowering is over to get a second flush of fresh leaves and flowers. You could use this. It is your garden. Treat it as you wish.

Joysie, I would say he is taking advantage of you. However, a very good, flowering, evergreen, dwarf, ground cover plant, is Pachysandra. It will even grow under conifers.

joysie21 , you could try heucheras, perennial geraniums & your bedding begonias which don't mind shade. You could always ask the gardener to put down some weed control fabric between your main plants & cover it with a mulch of chipped bark or gravel which would stop a lot of the weeds coming through, I did that for my late mum-in-law years ago & it worked fairly well & cut down on the weeding.

You should now thank the gardener for offering advice on how you can save money by using plants to reduce his hours.
