August Update ...
It's finally happened. I've harvested most of the remainder of my Onions ! They are now sitting in my cunningly crafted Allium Aerator Array (pat pending). These are all on the RoofNet, so you can click for bigger onions ! There are around 25 or so onions still growing, mostly vision F1's and James Longkeeping. In total, this will give me around 95-100. Less than I originally planned for, but I'm well happy with the result ! I'll probably harvest the remainder in around a fortnight, and then there will be a RoofParty ! And then.... a roundup of lessons learned... and this diary will be complete !

This diary will be done, when you have prepped for next year and shown us the plaited onions and written up all your onion recipes, Mr Roofgardener....... no cut corners, thank you!

I have just discovered this thread Roofy and as we say here in NI "It`s a cracker " I`ve really enjoyed reading all the info, advise and "crack" . Love the utube vidios posted it on my pinterest . I grew some shallots a couple of years ago , expecting them to look like onions so when they grew as a bunch I though they were defective and dumped them all you live and learn.

We never DID have a chance to chat properly did we daitheplant ? I guess this means I'll have to come over again ! Put the kettle on ! Onions almost Over
I harvested almost all of the Onions in the Annexe yesterday. There where Vision F1's and James Longkeeping. They where a bit small, and originally I was dissapointed, but then I realised that they are PERFECT for making a mixed salad, or chopping up REALLY finely and putting in cottage cheese or cream cheese. So overall I was quite happy Possibly even bordering on the smug ?
| Well, there are a couple-or-three still growing (their leaves hadn't fallen over yet), but the two front beds have now been raked over, and sown with Radishes, 'wot my Sister eats by the fistfull !
Apart from the 2-3 tail-end-charlies, all that remains are the Shallots (never grown them before, so I'm quite excited), and my two surviving Kelsae Giants. I will probably harvest these on the weekend !
|
| Here are the onions drying in the rack ! Peanuts compared to - say - daitheplant's harvest, but I like them ANYWAY
