Di, it is the border UNDERNEATH the windowboxes Bess want to plant up. My understanding daitheplant , is she means the graveled border underneath the window boxes. sea thrift (armeria ) perhaps that likes dry conditions . A continuous edging of snow in summer (Cerastium) would look nice , keep the weeds down and only need trimming .

Di, it is the border UNDERNEATH the windowboxes Bess want to plant up. Oops, Dai, but the aubretia and white lady would still grow there. Bess - I have had wild violets take up residence in the gravel between the back of the house and the patio slabs. They have covered it in 8yrs, all by themselves! I will try to find a picture of mum's plant, Bess

I still don't know what 'White Lady' is, Dianthus - I googled it but got loads of plant suggestions. Thank you everyone, lots of suggestions I like Ladybird's idea, Cerastium sounds nice and low maintenance.

Do you like Erigeron karavinskianus, Bess? I love it, and once you've got it, like Nigella (another possibility) you have it forever. I could pot up a couple of pieces and nurture them until they're ready to post to you if you'd like me to?

I had to look that up - but yes, I do like them, assuming you mean Mexican Daisies (Google confused me a bit with all the definitions.) It says it does well in poor soil, and my gardener keeps telling me how horrible my soil is - so it would probably be another good suggestion. I appreciate your offer to send me some, it would be really nice and I never say no to a plant although I see you can get the seeds on eBay and in all honesty that would be cheaper than you posting plants to me - so I could just do that
