Thanks Cherry, I will do that today. You advised me to cut these back last year too, are these the branches which need pruning every year?
I'm looking forward to a good crop this year, last year the fruit got Pear Midge so I've dug a bed all around the tree, this should stop it from hapening this year.

This type of growth depends on weather and soil conditions and how heavily pruned the tree was the season before. There may not be much to prune next year.
Geoff Stebbings is a believer in feeding the fruit trees too.

When I dug the bed around it's base I covered it with 3 inches of manure.
