I think I have taken enough cuttings now. I have taken 412, and 119 are potted up and thirty odd more are ready for potting.

Running out of space now . Think I need to get a bigger greenhouse, or another one. 349 potted up, with another 200 to pot up. And I haven't even started to take my show ones yet!!! The car boot sales start at Easter, so hopefully flog a few there, to help pay for the leccy bill .

Hi JD you look to have some fine looking plants there my good buddy.
Cat and Lou I have just got off the phone to Moonlights Dad he is very busy looking after the girls, school runs and dance classes. He tells me that of the seedlings Jane had managed to sow last year he has saved quite a number of the to flower again second year. He also says some are very very good indeed infact some better than his. There is a couple of ball dahlias one almost black, a Collerette red with a white collar, a Waterlily dahlia and quite a number of miniature cactus/semi cactus, so he is quite chuffed with her efforts. How pleased and proud she would have been to hear her Dad say she had some very good seedlings and ones that he has selected to grow again a fantastic achievement and great endorsement from Dad. I am sure one or two will see the light of day in a couple of years.

That's really good news to hear, Ian. Often wonder how Moonlights family are getting on. Thank you for the news. Especially about her seedlings, she would have been tickled pink that her Dad thought they were worthy of growing on. Was only thinking of Moonlight, and Tel, as I was potting some cuttings of Garden-Friends today. Sadly, very much missed the two of them, the forum is a poorer place without them.

Thank you for updating us all ian Moonlight is greatly missed and it means a lot that her dad and children are surviving each day. The news of her seed and plant potential is smashing and as you said she would have been proud as punch that her dad thought highly of her choices and effort. The dark/black sounds interesting and like you I look forward to seeing pictures in the future. Do send regards from us next time you catch up with the family

Thanks for the update ian !! I often think of Jane, and Tel. I noticed a few weeks ago that someone (perhaps her hubby or dad) had logged on to her old thread. Its great that her seedlings are doing well and her girls are still interested....I often wonder how he's coping, bringing up two girls, obviously with the help of her parents. Thanks again xx ps; just got a card to say my plants from Halls are ready for collection,,,,,Yeah !

Hi again guys, a quick question regarding taking cuttings. Is there a cut off date when it is no longer viable to take a cutting and expect it to flower in the garden? Just that the tubers I'm taking cuttings from are still putting out shoots and I'm still taking cuttings at the moment but wondered if I am going to be wasting my time soon.
Thanks in advance

Hi Johnjess. You've got plenty of time to take cuttings. Probably up to the second week of May, for viable plants to bloom in the garden. Don't forget to keep some for pot tubers. That way you'll always have good stock of you favourite varieties

Thanks johndoe I'll keep going then! It would be a shame to have all the growth and not use it . Really enjoying the challenge of getting the cuttings to root, I've had around 75% success so far so I'm really happy with how its going.
Thanks again johndoe,
johnjess

You keep on cutting Johnjess. 75% is not to bad a success rate. As you can see, I'm still cutting, and will till the end of April, though mostly from Mother plants, not tubers.

My order from Halls of Heddon arrived today, really pleased with them. Very well packaged lovely healthy looking Dahlias, just hope that I can keep them going!! Following the instructions so they're potted up and watered now I'll leave them in peace for a day or two. That's a great looking setup johndoe, very envious!

Another beginners question from me sorry. So I have a cutting which has gone quite tall and I'm wondering what to do with it. I'll describe it then hopefully someone can advise me what to do. The cutting has been potted on but now has the first pair of leaves about an inch above the pot then there is 3-4 inches of stem (normal??) before the second pair of leaves then around 2-3 inches of stem to the final pair of leaves and the tip. I'm considering taking the top as a cutting is this the right thing to do or will the growth slow down anyway?
If I do take the cutting from the top will the original plant keep growing and would I cut the long stem section which would be left off or leave it alone? Or will the growth slow naturally?
All my other cuttings look as I would have expected just this one standing above the rest!
The plant is Kenora Challenger and I only have one of it so I'm keen to get this right!
Thanks in advance
johnjess
