Well - the stream does get low in dry periods, but it only takes a cloudburst on the Quantocks to get it back to normal again! I'm very grateful for the stream for watering - I'd have lost plants in the summer as well as the winter, otherwise!

If I water the garden at all its in the evening. I have three water butts, but as our water is metered, I try, as much as possible, not to use the hose. I use tap water for the greenhouse, but my greenhouse is not used much during the summer months, too shady, so I rely on the water butts for the outside pots.

OH fixed up a pump from the stream so I can run a hose off it. That's because our water pressure is soooo low that some days we only get a dribble out of the taps. If we get a dry period, the hose is running all day, moved round the garden gradually on a stand. And yes - it's legal. You preempted my question Geranium. Farmers have to be licensed to use the ditches here and most farms of any size have their own reservoirs.

When do you start watering regularly? atm although the soil is still quite claggy a bout 5" down, the top is getting quite dry already. Most years I start 'hosing' around the middle of May...when some of the hardy annuals are putting on a lot of growth.

I would be careful if you have a clay type soil in case it stays cold when watered.
