Hi Cat, a very Happy New Year to you too.
I'm looking forward to getting my Dahlias set up and under way, something to think about other than the current situation!!
My new one for this year is Sheval Megan, looking forward to seeing how it grows for me.
Have you started yet?

Hi JJ. You'll love Sheval Megan. It's nearly indestructible. Easy to manage, weatherproof and non fading. Good decorative form though sometimes lacks a bit of petal. Stem are ramrod straight and strong. It's a, 'does what it says on the tin' dahlia!!
Good luck for the coming year.

Hi johndoe, thank you and all the best for the season to you as well. Are your tubers underway ?
I'm looking forward to trying Sheval Megan , bought with the weatherproof part in mind!! I had Josudi Hercules last year as well and it stood the weather up here really well. So slowly narrowing down what does and doesn't suit for me.
Hopefully this year will see a more normal show schedule johndoe, last year must have been really frustrating , loads of good blooms and nowhere to show them.I

No, nothing on heat yet, probably the end of the month for the slow burners then the rest by the middle of Feb. Used to start early but ended up with more plants than I had room for!!
Yes, it will be good if the show go ahead but very doubtful at this moment in time. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.
Take care

Hi all , a quick question, I have had my Mary's Jomanda plants for 4 years this year. Originally purchased as mini plants from Halls of Heddon . I'm just wondering does the quality of stock/flowers just roll on continuously or does it deteriorate after a while?
Just wondering while I still have time to order replacements as I do like Mary's and would like to keep them for a while yet.
Thank you.

Hello JJ. The answer to your question is Yes. All tuber stock breaks down over a period of growing time. You'll still get flowers but they will now be as good a quality as a first year cutting. If you keep using the same tuber over and over again it will become exhausted and will not be able to give you the best possible blooms. This is why exhibitors only use first year cuttings for their plants, this way you are getting fresh stock every year. Another way to keep healthy stock is take pot tubers of your favourite varieties and use these the following year instead of your old tubers.
Hope that makes sense.

Hi johndoe, thanks for taking the time to reply. I probably should have added that each year I have propagated cuttings from the previous years tubers. Does this mean that I am creating fresh stock each year?
I find Mary's Jomanda doesn't make great tubers in the first year though. Possibly something I am getting wrong during the growing period, always thin spindly tubers compared to others that I grow.
Thanks again
Johnjess

I see, sorry, I thought you meant using the same tuber. You should be okay with the stock if you're doing fresh cuttings, but as I said, you keep 2 or 3 cuttings and make pot tubers with them and the following year use these for your cuttings and you should see the difference in bloom vigor.

My first three tubers are growing. Isn't it exciting! Always is, Derek. When you first see those tiny green shoots appearing it never fails to get you excited.
Good luck for the coming year.
