Due to the very cold North/Northeast wind I haven't put my tomato seedlings back out on the balcony. They will have to stay in our bedroom for today at least & probably tomorrow again.

I always sow my tomato seeds on 21st March, in a heated propagator. This year I decided to sow them a week earlier but not in the heated propagator & they germinated on 21st March!

Today after several days in our bedroom I put the tomato seedling outside on the balcony again today. The first true leaves are just starting to show so soon I will have to separate the 2 or 3 that have come up with more than one seedling.
The other seeds I've sown on the balcony show no signs of germinating as yet - hardly surprising since we had a very cold week with snow & ice & frosts. As this coming week is forecast to be warmer, if not sunnier, I hope some will germinate soon.

Yesterday I wanted to separate some of the tomato seedlings that had germinated in the same compartment of the Rootrainer. I had hoped that I would be able to separate them without doing too much damage. My intention was to move the extra seedling form their cell to the cell that didn't have a seedling in it. As I was putting the seeds in the individual cells some must have stuck to my fingers & without realizing it they got covered over. I couldn't do it any earlier as we had a a couple of weeks of cold windy weather. .

The tomato seedlings I potted up individually don't seem to have minded being transplanted from the Rootrainers & are growing well a week later. I'm thinking of doing the same with those that are still in the Rootrainers on Tuesday.

The other seeds I sowed a few weeks ago are now germinating. I was getting impatient but it seems the warmth of the last few days has made all the difference. Even the Rudbeckias have begun to germinate. I was beginning to despair but it seems I'm too impatient & they only needed a few days of extra warmth to germinate!

I sowed lots of seeds last week, some vegetables in a raised bed, peas and sweet peas in a polytunnel and other things (like annual flowers and tomatoes) in propagators. Several are coming up now and I'm hoping the rest will do so soon.

Thank you balc2 the seeds are slowly germinating now, I have a few tomatoes coming up already, including the outdoor cherry ones and Roma. Peas are erratic and vegetables in the raised bed are coming up except the onions, I may have to sow another lot in trays if they don't appear. Annual flowers are coming slowly, Livingstone daisies are doing best but they are always quick to germinate.

Good to hear some of your seeds have germinated, Eli! I think it may be too late now to sow any more onion seeds as they will only reach the size of spring onions this year! You should have bought sets instead. They grow a lot quicker & will give you decent size bulbs by the time you need to lift them. Onion seeds should be sown at the start of winter, in fact many allotment growers sow theirs on Christmas Day! I did the same one year but I can't remember now how they did. When I had an allotment I always bought onion sets. I got some excellent crops as well!

I was looking at the tomato seedlings I potted up a couple of weeks ago & thinking I may not have to repot them into bigger pots before putting them in growbags at the end of May. They aren't making the progress I would have expected. But then the last couple of weeks have been quite cool & will continue that way for another week!

I usually plant onion sets balc2 but they never do well so I thought I'd try seeds this year. I think I'll start them off earlier and inside next year .
I'm sorry you've had cool weather, it's been warm and dry for April here this year. I hope your tomatoes perk up soon.

Sets have the advantage that you can plant them a lot later & space them at the precise distance apart! They are a lot less fiddlier than seedlings + you don't have to prick them out or repot them! You can also plant them in small pots for a month or two before you put them in the soil as they will grow & also get underway quicker outside resulting in bigger onions in the end. I did this the very first year I helped out a friend with his allotment. Following years I planted the sets directly in the soil on the allotment.
We are having lots of low cloud from off the North Sea with cold, but not strong, wind from the NNE. This afternoon the cloud has broken a bit & the sun has come out which is making for a nice afternoon/evening.
