I love ducks. Merlin that sounds right as there are lots of pheasants in the ditches, yet they come home to roost in the trees at night.
A few years ago, a Mallard was walking across the A10 with a single file of ducklings behind her. She got run over and the babies got confused and were running around her. The engineer got out of the car and took the dead mother to the edge of the road, but had trouble rounding up the ducklings. Unfortuately, the nest was on the edge of the road. Would you believe, on the other side cars still kept mowing them down. He phoned our vet friend who came and helped and she took them all back to her huge pond where they were happy and grew up to make a lot of ducks. She had to give some away at one point. He loves nature, so it was a horrible sight for him.

We have a pair of Mallards that nest every year on the stream bank tucked away from view. She has five ducklings this year. I do hope they all survive - I count them anxiously every time they swim along the stream! Proud father was keeping watch this morning - standing on the lawn for a long time.
Cherry - we posted at the same time - how dreadful! Why can't some people appreciate wildlife?

We have a pair of Malard ducks on the pond at the moment. They arrived this afternoon, I doubt if they will stay but it would be great if they did.

Cherry that was so sad, there are some very uncaring people around, I'm glad they managed to rescue at least some of them

Our ducklings began hatching at noon today. OH managed to get these photos of them at only a few minutes old. They have not left the nest yet. Perhaps we will see them on the pond tomorrow.
