I used to see a lot of lizards and adders too in Galloway, but I see neither here. This is probably due to the intensive farming round about.

Note how in the first shot the tail is a different colour to the body. Must have lost it's original tail escaping from the jaws/beak of something...
It is a lovely animal Sb and not one I had really given much thought to until I saw this one today. Quite rare or at best locally common. So alert, I loved the way it cocked its head to look at me. :-)

You are lucky, we don't get lizards down here. I've had an odd glimpse of one up on the moors but they don't hang around to have their photo taken.

We get slow worms and grass snakes, but no lizards. How interesting that they prefer the Northern climes!

I used to have a 'pet' eyed lizard as a teenager. It was found wandering at the local docks. the loca vet reckoned it was one of the spanish subspecies. I looked after it for about 5 yrs. I accidentally caught its tail and it 'threw' it off. Totally mesmerising, it thrashed around for a good 30 mins. the lizard hid in its vivarium for hours. It became very tame and would walk onto my hand . Its tail did grow back but as you observed it was a different colour to the rest of its body.

I think I'll stick to a Labrador as my pet, thanks all the same.

Blue tongue lizards make good pets for children in Victoria. They are fed on tomatoes among other things, so they have interesting colour in their defacation. I was frightened of most reptiles as I lived in the country and was taught to be wary.

News update. As I'm on Twitter, I'd posted the pictures of the Lizard (first ones at head of post) and a Lizard expert commented telling me he said it looked more like a Common Wall Lizard which isn't native to the UK. I told him there was a pet shop nearby (at least at the time). It looks as though it was an escapee then. The lizard up by the waterfall is our native Common though
