Very useful tool but I use a draw hoe or a rake to earth up the spuds. Mattock is fine for digging out tree roots etc.

So that is what that tool is called, I agree, good word. It would be a bit of overkill for earthing up my potatoes now. A few years ago before the soil had been improved so much, it was a necessity. It is much more useful than a pick axe

I once used an ads (probably spelt wrong) but it's similar to a Mattock but for hewning (also spelt wrong) wood. You swing it between your legs.
