Can some one tell whats eating my R/Beans I planted them last week end and they've been fine went to check them this morning and this is what I found. There's nothing underneath the leaf that we can see. Is there some thing I can spray or put round them please. I've never had this before.

I'd say slugs, its a bit early for weevils, but I see you have pellets down, did you sprinkle those after the damage?

Slugs or snails. Any slime trails around? That would tell you for sure. Also check after dark using a torch and see if you can see the culprits. ps bit early for runners. Not even opened the packet yet.

This is true. I have at last learnt, after many years, not to rush into sowing seeds and not to sow too many.

I sowed mine today. I sowed them in pots and have put them somewhere 'mouse free' to germinate.

So so true, we need someone to dampen our natural enthusiasm as it is heartbreaking to lose stuff, not to mention the cost. This year I've just sown a few and will carry on at intervals in the hope that I get continuity.

Les, to get back to your holy leaves, I too am sure it's slugs. Do you have a pond? Even a small one makes a BIG difference.

Les, when I plant my beans and sow or plant lettuces I sprinkle bran meal around them as a barrier. The molluscs will not cross over this and I have had good results with this method and it does no harm to amy other wildlife in the garden. Be prepared to re-apply after rain though, but I believe you would have to do so with slug pellets.

It probably works by them eating that instead? isn't bran what slug pellets are made of (as well as metaldehyde) ?

Steve, I believe that they do it eat and it causes them to bloat and unable to eat anything else but it also works as a barrier as it dries up their slime, so really it is a double whammy
