Did you notice the campanula 'Sorastro' that Carol bought ? I have a couple and they just seem to get taller every year, they're about 2' tall now. I have Kent Belle too and that's going the same way - ..... i wonder if lifting it each year, like some other perennials, would keep it shorter .... it's believed that Achillea needs this treatment too - those grow taller too Do you think this would work ? Have you tried the Chelsea chop? I'm giving it a test run on a few plants this year.[/color] So am I WF, I'm trying it out on some phlox

Carol Klein and a couple of other articles i've read all say by lifting them and replanting them, dividing if desired, reduces their height. It applied to achilleas so i just wondered I'm going to try it because i'll rip them out if not - not only are they getting taller but very invasive here ..... infact everything's invasive here, it's got to be the soil - i only plant things suited to these conditions and they're clearly liking it too much.

I've known worse problems Louise, I too have tried 'the Chelsea Chop' this year, with some Maltese Cross.

That is Lychnis chalcedonica, and I said before this put me off Lychnis until saw the good ones during the last week. I have not grown it for years, because I remember this plant having a few flowers on top of a straight group of uninteresting leaves. A lot of work has obviously been put into it.

I have Campanula Kent Belle and thought it was an annual. I get if from Darbys with no name you see. I should have known because they don't have annuals as far as I know. It gets quite top heavy, but I think it might have completely died last winter.

Ah, i have lychnis chalcedonica and quite like it for its vibrant coloured flowers but my favourite is the one Peony spoke of - viscaria, i have 2 large clumps of that. Kent Belle is lovely, as is Sorastro

That is the plant I'm trying it out on merlin. You are right Cherry, it is leggy but I love the red, I'm hoping the 'Chelsea chop' might help that.
It is a truly tough plant, I'm liking 'truly tough' more and more.

I have the vivid red one, and a dusty pink. Are you thinking about Lychnis coronaria, Louise? That comes in magenta, white and white with a pink centre - remember I told you I'd found loads of seeedlings round it this year?
I'll post photos of the flowers later.
