Do you remember how upset I was when I thought that my Roscoea was dead? Well I had a dig around and was convinced of it as I went even deeper than when I originally planted it. Now the good news is that it is coming through the earth with six shoots and a seed of it which I sowed has just germinated. That now ends my dilemma about whether I should replace it, but I would like to try the red or the purple now. It obviously pulls itself down like some other bulbs.

Hardier than expected then? Certainly after this last winter!

Lou found hers with digging, Geranium's is up, so we are now waiting on Grindle's to emerge. I can't explain how pleased I feel about this as I have watched it from when it was tiny and in a pot. It is quite unlike anything else I have seen. Understated.

I'd like a purple one - can't remember its name off the top of my head. I'll keep my eyes open for one, I think.

My seed is dated August Grindle and it is just passed germination now. I sowed it like primula.
Back again. I covered the seed with a paper bag when it was getting close to being ripe.

I forgot to answer the flowering part of your question. Now, at last I am getting peace to sit here. I bought the Roscoea at Beth Chatto just under three years ago when I went to see the garden. I left it in the pot for quite a few months then found a place for it, but it had expanded out of the pot and had to be cut out of it by my husband. I planted it out and it flowered in a couple of months, so I don't think it would take long from seed. Because I couldn't find mine in the ground, even though I dug for about nine inches, I am quite sure this likes to be deep and pulls itself down. That must have been what it was doing in the pot. Lilium nepalense does that which means the flowers can pop up from anywhere as it travels and digs down. Tulips do this also to a lesser extent. I think it has real character and this is part of the reason I love it so much.

Those seeds were beautiful varieties. I was very interested. I probably could have made more grow if I had not been doubtful and poked around in the pot.
