For the last week or so i've been watching bluetits in the clematis balearica on the obelisk in my back garden. I've finally seen what they're up to ...... they're going for the old seedheads of that Clematis that are still on the stems They dart in and out of the 'birds-nest' of (evergreen) stems and pick at the seedheads - it's lovely to watch When they're done with them they dart around the other shrubs and then have a quick snack of suet pellets (i crush them) from 2 of the flatter, open perspex feeders I'm chuffed to bits that more birds are coming into the back garden now !

I wish, Cherry Infact it's brought a friend, a b****y stripey ginger thing - it too is on my Hitlist The pair of them are back there, night and day, fighting and generally being a b****y nuisance The bluetits appear when it's quiet out there so i'm hoping they're watching and listening for cat sounds The amount of sunflower seed around means field mice which means cats so i try to keep the fallen stuff to a minimum

Question when were on bird feeding subject, I was told today (By her next-door) that you shouldn't feed birds this time of year as they find enough to eat and was groaning on about the lady 2 doors down from me still feeding the birds, I piped up well i have a feeding station for them with fat balls, nuts mixed seeds & meal worms. I was then told that some one had been summoned for feeding the birds in summer when she had be told to stop (who she said by has left my mind i switch off when she rambles on). Now I see little truth to this but I thought what do you feed the birds this time of year?

Floydie I would take no notice of her, I can't imagine being summoned for feeding the birds in summer apart from seagulls and pigeons in areas where they can be a nuisanceand even then I would think you would more than likely just be asked not to do it, I keep my feeders going all year round www.rspb.org.uk/advice/helpingbirds/feeding/whentofeed.aspxthe RSPB advice

Yes, there's more for birds to eat in the warmer months but still feed them.
Various wildlife bodies say DO NOT stop feeding during these months.

I just want to point out that for two years I have put food out until the food does not get eaten. That happened about two weeks ago, so it was put back in storage in case mice and rats were encouraged. There are four sources of fresh water just around the house. There is an awful lot of bird food on the farm here, so I don't think they need it in the summer.
