My husband's cousin is on Facebook and when I said perhaps I should get over my prejudice and join it, she advised me not to. She pointed out that people want to be a friend, when they are not wanted and that can cause difficulty because you are often stuck with people to speak to that you don't want. Does that sound right, or have I misunderstood?

Does that sound right, or have I misunderstood? If you join only accept people as friends who you would want to talk to or you can switch off the 'chat' part of it, mine is always switched off. My sister lives in Spain, it is handy to see all her photographs. If want to get in contact I use email.

If you click on the 'Chat' thing at the bottom of your screen, scroll up to 'options' and then up to 'Go offline'. I don't know how to be invisible, I thought if the chat was offline then you would be

Just had a thought .......... It's the Chat Room ! On an old forum that we used to go on there was suddenly an influx of members joining. They didn't ever contribute to the forum at all yet there were lots online at one go ....... the reason HAD to be that they'd found the Chat Room and were using it amongst themselves. This would explain the Most Users Online question. It's annoying that people can come in here, with no interest in the topic and steal the use of our facilities It's the principle !

We have it set so only registered members can view or use the chat

But we've had quite a few members join recently and they don't contribute so i thought this was quite a possibility.
