I was not sure where to post this so I thought I would start a thread for Chrysanthemums in here. Today I received my order of 12 chrysanthemum plug plants from Woolmans. They are from 2 collections that they do, the Dartmoor Collection and the Exmoor Collection and they are the large bloom type. It will be my first go at growing Chrysanthemums so fingers crossed. The varieties are listed below: Exmoor Collection: 1 x Iris Morris 1 x Dorridge Crystal 1 x Louise Park 1 x Amy Lauren 1 x Pot Black 1 x Laser Dartmoor Collection: 1 x Ada Evans 1 x Rachel Knowels 1 x Trina Bell 1 x Sutton White 1 x Dorridge Vulcan 1 x Fair Weather I have potted them on into 3" pots and put them in the greenhouse. One was damaged a little but hopefully not enough to stop it from getting going again.

I look forward to seeing them Sirplantalot, if I had space I would grow lots of them, in fact I could become a 'Chrysanthemum Tel' ;D

SirP. Go to Derek's Diary and then Ask Derek to attract his attention. Derek tends to look in every night as he is busy tending Chrysanthemums among other plants and helping at the school. Tel is a dahlia grower as you know, and does know about Chrysanths I should think, but he probably would not be seen dead having anything to do with them.

Hi Sirplantalot. I have just seen this thread you have started because Cherry has left me a message about it.But for her it may have been a while before I found it because I don,t get time to look at all the threads every day.Now that I have found it I will try to keep in touch.I write my diary almost every day and a lot of it is about chrysanths so I hope this will help you.I grow about 150 plants of disbud varieties at home and 80 sprays on the allotment.I used to grow late chrysanths which flower in the greenhouse in November but don,t do so any more. Some of your varieties are lates. I will try and help you all I can so if you want to ask me anything you can ask me here or on the "Dear Derek"column.

Thanks Derek. I am sure I will be asking questions and for help with my plants. The plants I purchased from Woolmans that I have listed earlier were classed as early reflexed on their site. Is it best to grow these outside or in the greenhouse?

Hi sirplantalot I have been looking up these plants you are growing.I have grown some of them myself. The "Exmoor"collection are all reflex varieties and the "Dartmoor"collection are incurves and intermediates.Iris Morris and Fairweather are lates and will not flower till November.Pot Black and Laser are classified as October flowering .All the rest are earlies which should flower in September.I can,t understand why they have put some lates in with collections of earlies.Earlies can be grown in the ground as I do(see Dereks diary yesterday) or in pots.Lates are always grown in pots and carried into the greenhouse in October to flower in November.Varieties classified as "October flowering"can be grown as earlies or lates if you wish.To grow them as earlies though the plants should have been stopped (ie.the tops pinched out)in April so I think I would treat them as lates and grow them in pots then if they dont flower early enough you can take them in the greenhouse. All your plants would be better outside now rather than in the greenhouse. They are not tender like dahlias and will stand a bit of frost. If it does come frosty you can always take them in at night but they now need hardening off. The plants will need stopping (pinch the tops out)if they havent been done.Do the earlies now if they are tall enough(about 5 or 6 inches) and the lates in early June. When the roots have filled your 3 inch pots the plants will need potting into 5 inch ,then 9 inch if they are to be grown in pots.If they are to be grown in the ground they can be planted out any time now. Hope this helps. If you want to know anything else just ask me. By the way I see that you live in Lancashire.I live in Worsley.Do you live near enough to come and look at my chrysanths?

Thank you Derek for the detailed info. It will be a great help to me. I will try to post some pictures soon of these plants so you can see how they are doing or to be precise if I am doing things right. I am about 35 miles away from you near Burnley so It may be possible for me to pay you a visit some time. I will let you know.

Another job I suggest you do is to spray your plants every 2 or 3 weeks with systhane to prevent white rust. This is a devastating disease and has become fairly common recently. It starts as white spots on the leaves and once you have it it is difficult to cure.It is better to spray to prevent it.

Thanks for the tip on using Systhane Derek. I will get some as soon as possible. Just a thought, would Rose Clear do for this? It does not mention white rust just rust on the label. I use it on Dahlias and other plant in the garden for a number of things.

I think roseclear may work but I would still get some systhane as it is usually recomended for this disease.Perhaps you could spray with them both in turn.
