The gas people are renewing the gas main on our road. They have dug a hole in part of our garden to reconnect new piping to the new main. They have had to remove a hydrangea bush that had been in the garden for over 5 years. This hole is where it were planted This is the hydrangea left on the narrow brick path between the two beds.

That happened to me at our last house. It was sewerage pipes there, so that was quite a job too. We could commiserate, but I suppose there are other tales of woe. You just have to treat it as a new planting opportunity Tel.

Is the Hydrangea recoverable? Maybe if you potted it up and gave it some TLC it might survive. You could also take cuttings at this time of year.
What a pain for you, though!

I had a similar situation with BT. They dug a trench (about 18" wide) the entire length of my front garden and about 2' deep. They took this trench out onto the path where the 'manhole' type thingy was because they had to renew cable, which was about 30 years old, from the main thingy to my house. When i've spoken to other people these situations happen quite often, not that that's any consolation

I'm sitting here aghast at the thought of BT digging across my front garden! At least there's no gas anywhere within about 8 miles.

I would be contacting the gas board Tel and explain about the plants, they may compensate you. I believe that happened here a few years ago with the electricity board and lots of shrubs along the bank of the burn and the then owners got compensated.

The workmen re planted the Hydrangea yesterday, back where it was. That bed is now a rubble bed, instead of a nice topsoil bed.

Tel, you would never have expected them to get this right would you? Your poor hydrangea. It will look a lot better than mine. Mine is almost dead with lack of water. It is next to the water tank with the overflow pointing at it and there has been no rain since 26th Feb. Well, a trace of rain.

You certainly have a serious drought in your area, i thought it was bad enough here. I have not done enough watering myself, the gooseberries have mildew on them, i am sure its because it is too dry for them.

We have the same problem here that Cherry has, no rain since end Feb, and although I have been watering the garden fairly regularly, lots of plants are starting to suffer, the delphiniums don't look too good, very small flower heads and some mildew But on the bright side the salvias and pinks are doing well

that's a shame Tel, hope your hydrangea survives for you. I'll have a similar problem when my new fence goes up, I'm dreading which shrubs will have to come out for fence posts
