I spotted this in the garden this evening. It was in flight when I first saw it, I will admit to moving out of its way on more than one occasion. I was a lot happier when it landed. It is a Prionus coriarius and about an inch long

He is a bit magnificent, it took me a while to ID him, he is not in any of my books. I believe it is a he because of the bumps on his antenna, the info on it I have found is a little sketchy.
It seems all the wood I have around the garden is paying off.

I disturbed this one today while splitting wood. It is a bit out of focus, it had no intention of keeping still for a photograph. Carabus nemoralis It is not a huge beetle at 2.5 cm and should be hibernating. I relocated it to a quiet corner where it won't get disturbed again.
