I've noticed that this year my dahlia blooms don't seem to be lasting very long in a vase of water ....about 3 days. Hope Richard sees this......any tips on how to make them last longer?....other than pricking the stems....

Hope Richard sees this......any tips on how to make them last longer?....other than pricking the stems.... He did! For long lasting blooms indoors cut as loose buds, so nice and young. I do quite a bit of cut flower and on the web page there is a link to a guide on how to look after them www.withypitts-dahlias.co.uk/cut_flower.html My local customers tell me that they are able to keep their's for 7 - 10 days in a vase. I'd say 10 days is optimistic but we manage to have ours for about a week before throwing them out. Hope this is of some help (and I hope it works for you!

I think it is very good of Richard to have a link on his web site that takes you straight to our dahlia thread. Thank you for doing that for us.

I took the trophies out of the wardrobe today to clean up before returning them, found the silver and bronze medals were still in the bag with the trophies. ;D

Just back from the allottment and have actual managed to cut a few flowers for tomorrow.3 Joan walker,3 brenda t,3 oakwood goldcrest.6 marys jomanda. They not great but theres not a great choice at the moment but its a start. Also cut 9 moor place and 13 minley carol so with a bit of luck ( some might go to big) I will have a go at the 3 vases of 5 poms.Early start in the morning getting picked up at 6.30 and flowers have to be staged by 10.Everythings coming on a treat now so should have (weather permiting) plenty flowers for the next 2 weeks.

Not expecting to much tomorrow lou I havent really got the blooms for a show where there will be a lot of stiff opposition. The likes of phil watson, gordon hodgson and Ian kitching (who all show regularly at harrogate)will be there among others.Just really want to blow the cobwebs off and get showing again as thats what all the time and effort is for.

I do so agree with you dc.....its good to get into the swing of things..... but its disappointing when you know you haven't got the "quality" you are looking for, and know you can ultimately produce. Unfortunately, we don't have any control over the weather ..I do wish you well for Harrogate...I know its the "ultimate" for a lot of exhibitors...Its a shame I won't be there this year

I know the feeling DC, but you can only take what you have got on the day.

I hope you're not too disappointed - but remember that everyone's had the same weather, so you might be surprised!
