Because the "spot the mistakes "quiz that I put on the forum last week came to an abrupt end ,and has been removed,Rosie has asked me to repeat the one I put on a year ago on the other forum because there are many people on this forum that weren't on the other one. This quiz was composed for an inter society quiz night like the one I put on last week.Just to repeat what I said then in case some of you missed it,I read out the following story which contains 43
deliberate mistakes (I think) and when anybody spots a mistake they have to stick their hand up .The first person to do so has a chance to answer and win a point for their team.
If any of you wishes to email their answers to me I will check them and reply to tell them how many they have got right. This applies to any of my quizzes .(I will be putting a wildlife quiz on in a few weeks time)
"My vegetable garden is the envy of all my neighbours.I am able to keep my family in fresh vegetables all year round.
I lime the ground every year in winter particularly where I grow potatoes, and spread manure on at the same time.
I operate a four year crop rotation system. The first bed is for potatoes.I grow mainly first earlies like the old favourite King Edward.Other earlies I grow are Vales saphire and Edzell green..I like the pink eyed varieties like Kestrel and Winston.I also like the salad types like Red fir apple.I don't get potato blight because I spray early with bug clear.
The next bed is for other root crops such as Kohl Rabi, turnips, beetroot ,lettuce, carrots and globe artichokes..I prefer round beetroot like cylindra and boltearly. The turnips I grow are snowball and golden bat.My ground is too stony to grow good long carrots so I stick to stump rooted varieties like St Valery.Carrot fly is sometimes a problem on this bed but not flee beetles because they only attack brassicas. This bed is always well manured in the winter.
The next bed is for brassicas(apart from those on the root crop bed). These include cabbages, cauliflowers ,broccoli and sprouts.I like the round cabbages best such as castello and Winnigstadt.I also grow cabbages for winter like February King..With cauliflowers I am not keen on those with coloured heads like clapton.I stick to the white ones like "all the year round".I put a net over the brassica bed to keep off the cabbage blue butterflies.
The other bed is mainly for legumes such as peas, beans, sweet corn, marrows and courgetes. For peas I like the dwarf varieties like Show perfectness and for French beans my favourite is Red Rum. but i also grow the exhibition variety "The Princess"I always have a row of sweet corn in front of my runner beans. My favourite variety is moondance and for marrows I grow "green shrub.".
I have to spray the runner beans against chocolate spot and have to watch for attacks of the flea beetle.
Apart from the 4 beds that I rotate I have a seperate bed for onions, leeks and shallots. The onions I grow are Oxfordshire Champion and Pink baron. For leeks I have tried the Irish seedling but now I grow Pencil improved.
I have a polytunnel where I grow tomatoesand cucumbers. With tomatoes I grow the small cherry types like Shirley and Gardeners Joy as well as the normal size varieties like Moneylender.I feed them regularly with high nitrogen fertilisers.Because tomatoes and cucumbers are in the same family they require the same growing conditions.I grow the "all female" varieties of cucumbers like telephone.
I dont have a special bed for salad crops like lettuce.I grow them as catch crops between other vegetables.I like the "cut and come again"varieties like salad bowl and Webbs beautiful.
I also have an asparagus bed and I am proud of the fact that my family can have fresh asparagus for their Christmas lunch every year"
(Apart from the above mistakes the crop rotatin is the same as I actually use on my allotment)
