I shall be watching Lou, as will my daughter-in-law (from Bamburgh) as they often visit Alnwick when they stay with her father

I was actually in & watched the programme last Lou, the Alnwick section was great, I love those tunnels with the 'windows' cut into them & was interested by the idea of underplanting roses with blueberries, don't have the room to do that here but I've never seen it before, wonder if either the roses or blueberries get any benefit from it or is it purely for appearance?

I enjoyed the look at Alnwick gardens Lou, it looks beautifully maintained and I loved the area with the pools and the water tumbling down the steps and all the fountains

I had it recorded as I was away; have just watched it and enjoyed it of course ;D
The blueberries seem to co-exist quite nicely with the roses; which are quite tall standards. The hornbeam arches are filling in nicely now and look wonderful in full leaf....with the windows adding a different dimention.
As a matter of interest, The Garden was started with a £7m gift from The Duke of Northumberland; and has not received any public money via The Lottery

No Merlin. The gardens cost 35.1 million to construct. 16.6 million was raised by public funds and I remember the begging bowl going overseas for some of the money. Charitable Trust was granted much later down the line. I have a cassette of the engineering involved and how it started. The engineers in the main came from overseas too.

I liked the tunnel too I was confused by the roses/blueberries.I know that blueberries have to have ericaceous soil and thought that roses preferred slightly alkaline conditions....how does that work?? And my blueberries would be as tall as most roses not nestle quietly underneath them. I don't really approve of Alnwick Gardens anyway - the immensly wealthy and aristocratic lady got lots of public money and grants when she should have paid from her own coffers. There are many more deserving causes in my opinion. I thought that too Blossom, but i did like the visit to Alnwick,I enjoyed the whole programme on Friday ;D

In the top 5 I believe Rosie The final figure for the building of The Garden will not be known until Phase 3 is completed.....hopefully within the next 4/5 years; not a lot of spare cash floating around atm
