I thought I would show you the compost which is made in the 'dalek'. I do not turn it or add anything special. It is simply left to decompose while I use the other one. It is fine and crumbly. This is being spread on the veg beds at present.

Looks excellent stuff cherry. Wish my daleks would produce like that which reminds me I have to turn one out ready for next lot of ingredients. mostly the worms do the work in mine so a bit slow at times.

Looks excellent stuff cherry. Wish my daleks would produce like that which reminds me I have to turn one out ready for next lot of ingredients. mostly the worms do the work in mine so a bit slow at times. It is worms here too, plus an occasional mouse when I am putting scraps in the bin. It is not a fast, but as you can see the worms have finished processing. I start digging out from the bottom usually before the whole bin is ready. It must be good because it is very concentrated. SP I don't turn mine at all. Lou is yours at the house or on the allotment? I have a lazy heap for large branches and grass cuttings and another for leaves and grass cuttings in the woods covering nettles which is gradually getting rid of the nettles.

looks excellent stuff Cherry, how long does it take before you use it? I have to think about this Grindle. That one was completed, i.e. ready to use, in the autumn but I am using the bottom of the current bin to bury in veg beds. The one I photographed is my choice stuff which I know has no weed seeds and can be used in planting holes and mixed with chook pellets for throwing over the top of established plants. The dalek in use looks just as good at the bottom. This is not a very good answer is it? I will be using all of bin in the pic, and when the other one is full up, after checking that the rat wire is on the bottom and levelling it up, I will start with scraps and quality garden waste in the empty one. I could have used it after about 3 or 4 months in the summer I think but longer when the weather cools.

I probably keep mine about as long, but it looks much coarser than that, but it does the garden good, if I wanted it to look like that I would need to sieve it. Although I think the fact they are both in shade for most of the time doesn't help

I'm pretty much the same as you Cherry & my compost comes out like that from my 2 daleks hidden under the cherry tree at the end of the garden. I don't turn mine either but I do leave mine probably 6 months to a year before I use it. I add bags of decomposed leaves as well after they've broken down for 6 months or more at the side of the bins in bags. I use my homemade compost to add to pots when I'm potting up to make bought compost go further & use it to top up my raised bed.

Grindle, it just depends on the time it sits. I don't think it would be coarse if you could leave it a bit longer. Mine is in the shade too and SueA seems to be much the same. I notice that Sue has two of these dalek bins too.
