I started to have a bit of a sort out in the garden, I need to move some of the pots from around the house as we're going to have the gutters/fascias/drainpipes etc. replaced & I decided to plant some things out. Planted out an ornamental cherry, a lilac & climbing rose 'Handel' & then used their pots to pot on other plants, hoping to do some more today if the drizzle stops. Went to watch our local football team last night - not a good night, player sent off after 10 mins., floodlights failed just before half time & we lost 2-0, nice evening though & a bat flew over the stand ! Came home & was putting bird & hedgehog food out by torchlight & the hedgehog was sitting right next to me waiting & trying to play invisible.

Had to pick all the Hazel nuts even though they are not properly ripe. The squirrel is eating them all.

I wrestled out one of the 7ft tall teasel plants from the border & saved the seedheads & decided to plant out a little potted red spur apple tree where it had been. Started to dig out a hole & hit a pile of bricks buried in the ground! I had to dig around them with a trowel & prize them out, I think either the original builder or my late father-in-law must have had an obsession with burying rubble as there's concrete, glass, plastic, netting bricks etc. under almost everything! The robin was watching me & had to keep dodging flying soil while it was picking worms out of the ground around me, I think it thought I was it's personal chef! Planted the tree in there & cleared more small pots from around the house to the end of the garden, lots more to sort out yet.

Weeding, all I seem to do these days. Thousands of ivy seedlings all over the place. Did pick some Katy apples. Since neither of us like Blackberries we have decided to dig up the Thornless canes. Typical that this year we have the best crop ever. Wasps will like them on the compost heap (Swarming with the striped ones).

Did a bit more pot shuffling, planted out a 'Red Sentinel' crab apple tree which had been in a pot for years & was looking poorly in the hope that it may recover in the border & repotted a baby rowan tree & 'For Your Eyes Only' rose. This morning I had to go out to rescue a pigeon which 'Tiger' the neighbourhood cat had pounced on, they must have had a bit of a scrap as the were feathers down the lawn & near the back fence & I found the pigeon wedged tight between a storage box & the back fence. Luckily it was alive & didn't look badly hurt so I got dressed (went out in dressing gown!), put some thin gardening gloves on, pulled the box out a little & lifted it out, it fluttered, looked disgruntled & then flew off.

Been redoing Crosby's border, dug everything out, took out bucket full of bindweed, compost on and dug over, then starting putting plants back, got rid of a load of crocosmia bulbs, planted a new rhododenron, need some new plants in now as I have loads of spaces, pruned back a huge leycestaria and also a ribes odoratum which looks a bit sorry for itself, will see how it fares in the spring, if it doesn't pick up I will dig it out.

I like that grindle - 'need some new plants now ' - make space so you can refill it - sounds familiar!

We had a damp & drizzly start yesterday but it was warm & windy & the grass had dried out enough in the afternoon for me to mow the lawn & the garden was full of butterflies!

As Maureen's away this week I thought of sowing some wild oats but that radiotherapy put paid to that Actually been quite busy as helping neighbour with her house move. The removal people couldn't take all her potted plants so I loaded them in the trailer and transported them to her new home about 5 miles away. the 7' tall bamboo blew over but no harm done and I got a few plants for me to keep.
