peony, I won't need the lilies and I think they would not be acceptable. I am entering 5 culinary herbs. Does the rosemary need to be a single stem or can a little branch be alright? Same with the bay? I have black mitcham mint, fennel, sage in flower, tarragon, lavender, parsley and chives. I haven't made up my mind about the five yet. There is plenty of thyme, basil, etc., but these are looking tatty. WI tonight and my flower is Campanula lactiflora 'Prichard's Variety'. It won't be chosen though. They will go for a bright lily or huge rose. I just want to be different. Tell the WI the campanula is from Gods own County, so they have not to upset him. Seriously Good luck at the WI Cherry.

Here I am again. I changed my mind about the flower, and took my one and only dahlia. It was admired by everyone, so I thought it would be good for a prize, but no, it was a lily which won. I photographed the dahlia before I went so I will get it up on the forum tomorrow. The herbs class is for '5 stems, 1 of each of 5 distinct kinds. Vase provided.' That sounds like one single stem of each doesn't it? However, a wee branch would still be on a single stem. Can anyone offer advice for this or should I phone someone on the committee? The show is on Saturday peony. I don't expect to win anything at all, but I want the Campanula to be shown and admired, just to prove Tel that you are not all about dahlias. It is a very delicate flower and a pale powder blue but it is on strong straight stems. I am very fond of it.

According to the horticultural definitions, a 'herbaceous' plant is a plant which does not form a persistent woody stem. It may be annual, biennial or perennial. That might knock out the bay as a culinary herb.

I would interpret the specification as you have and as some herbs are woody, eg sage and rosemary, I think they would be included in the herb class. Are you taking some oasis with you? I ask this because one of the shows I did supplied vases but they were too deep for the flowers I had and I had to put oasis in the bottom of the vase so the flowers stood at the right height.

Good idea peony. Thanks for that advice. I will take oasis already wet for the herbs, but I am going to leave the big stems with leaves, etc., all the way down the stem and they should arrange against each other (I think!). I had better take oasis just in case. What a pal you are! Can the sage and chives be the flowering stems? The sage especially looks so pretty in flower and the chive flower will balance the lavender. All picked while still fresh from the night and sitting in a bucket of water in the pantry.

Well it doesn't say in the specification that they can't and it will make the arrangement more attractive I hope you have more success than I did, it took me 3 shows just to get a 'commended' Its good fun to try though and I met some very nice helpful fellow gardeners and enjoyed looking at all the other competitors' entries. I just do our club competitions now, I have a bit more success with those Have a good day tomorrow, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you

Good Luck from me that to Cherry. sorry not had chance to say earlier. Thank you everyone. When I showed the sweet peas about 4 or 5 years ago, I was very nervous, especially against national exhibitors. This time, it was great to see all the garden people and I was completely relaxed. There are some lovely entries. I will see how it goes. I will be back for the raffle and to pick up the flowers for the church flowers as I am on the rota.

Local shows are great fun - I hope you do really well it's experience for future shows too. I used to live in the Fens too, near Ely, but all the local shows were pretty big so I never got involved. Since moving to Herefordshire I've joined in the local show, as my Mum-in-law is a pillar of the community and I mustn't let the side down! But I mainly enter the Art sections. I've never exhibited much in a flower section of a show, just Spring bulbs, Geraniums, Orchids etc in the potted plants section. I can't seem to get plants looking perfect at the right time plus my patio garden is a tad small to grow enough prize blooms. I have to say the judging around here does seem a bit predictable too - all the same things win prizes. I know it's supposed to be all impartial and secret, but... ! It's the cooking/preserving section at our local show that people get really daggers drawn over Shortbread at dawn. Lemon curd and bottled onions are a particular point of contention!

Bess you must know that Downham Market is a big show. It is the next one along from Ely and it is big with quality in the classes. I did not expect to win anything and I went late on to collect the flowers and could not believe that I had a first with the 3 stems of flowering shrub and a second with the vase of 7 perennials. There were a lot of entries and I did not expect anything. I did not even look, but just went to clear up. I won the first prize with the raffle, so I am glad I bought the tickets this morning. It is a very heavy slate clock. I like it. I could not have done it without your help.
