There is a class in the local show for 'Flowers (Perennials)- 4 stems, 1 kind not named above'. The named ones are pinks, carnations, pansies, violas. Does this mean a stem with one flower such as aconitum, or does it include a stem, such as a perennial campanula, which is made up of many small flowers?
Another class is for a 'Vase of mixed flowers - Between 5 and 7 flowering stems assorted from 3 kinds. Exhibitor's own vase may be used.'
Would astrantia fit into any of these categories?

You can have as many flowers has you want Cherry, on each stem, I no you will not do this, but it has happened exhibitors have placed a annual stem in their exhibit and received a NAS

I am thinking about it, but I am a slow thinker. The Aconitum and Campanula lactiflora 'Pritchard's Variety' (from your garden Tel) could be considered and Astrantia is good in a vase. The other really pretty flower I have is Antirrhinum from seed sent years ago by Rosie. In my garden this is definitely perennial, but I don't think it would pass as such at a show.

Going back to my first question and thinking of the 7 mixed perennials, are these arranged to the same length in the vase or are they arranged as we would at home with some shorter to show off each flower?

Going back to my first question and thinking of the 7 mixed perennials, are these arranged to the same length in the vase or are they arranged as we would at home with some shorter to show off each flower? Cherry, do you know whether the judges are from the RHS? If they are local non RHS judges then I would 'arrange' the flowers so they can all be seen clearly. From your description of the class specification, which is not very detailed, it sound as though they will be local judges, so they will not be so particular.

peony I think the judges would be local, although the club is affiliated to the RHS. Would I take off the leaves which would be under water?

As you were! I have just found out that the show entries have to be in by 1600 hrs today. I am quite upset now as I had three or even four entries that would have worked. Bother!

It is OK. I phoned the entry in and the judges are local. What a silly woman I had to start with.

I agree with Peony, on the staging of your vase of perennials. The exhibit with 5 - 7 stems what does the schedule say, can annuals and perennials be used in that class, or is it one or the other? When is the show?

The show is on Saturday. I am having a go at the 7 perennials. The man who took the entry is entering this class as well. Another entry is for 5 culinary herbs and I am entering 3 stems of Deutzia in flowering shrub which should hold over for Saturday. Some lilies look like coming out as our weather is heating up tomorrow. If I need them for the 7 perennials, would they be allowed because they might be bulbs and not perennials?

Its difficult to know Cherry, I would 'hedge my bets' and take a couple of lillies with me and ask one of the officials whether they are allowed in the perennial class, and if they are you could then substitute for one of your other flowers.

If I feel I need them I will do that Peony, unless any experienced exhibitors on here tell me differently.

peony, I won't need the lilies and I think they would not be acceptable. I am entering 5 culinary herbs. Does the rosemary need to be a single stem or can a little branch be alright? Same with the bay? I have black mitcham mint, fennel, sage in flower, tarragon, lavender, parsley and chives. I haven't made up my mind about the five yet. There is plenty of thyme, basil, etc., but these are looking tatty. WI tonight and my flower is Campanula lactiflora 'Prichard's Variety'. It won't be chosen though. They will go for a bright lily or huge rose. I just want to be different.

You have a nice selection of herbs to choose from. Do they specify how they should be displayed? Good luck for tomorrow Cherry
