Verbena rigida here has some damage but seems to be quite hardy in this garden, this is its 2nd cold winter.

That looks alive - not too sure about mine! It does seed itself though - so I might be lucky.

They certainly do multiply Geranium, here they send underground runners in a 2' radius

I know you've said that V. rigida is almost thuggish in your garden! Most unfair when I struggle to keep it alive, and Lou's sounds like a goner.

No, it isn't reliable, except in Louise's sub-tropical paradise. ;D I tried V. rigida 'Lilac Haze' twice, and that's even worse. It didn't even seed itself, let alone send up new growth. I love the colour, but I'd have to think of it as an annual.

Did you have 'Lilac Haze', Lou? or V. rigida like this one?

They are both pretty. Do they grow in the manner of Verbena bonariensis? That is a horrible thing because it grows like a weed and seeds like mad. I spent 3 years pulling it out of the gravel.

No, Cherry - 'Lilac Haze' didn't seed itself at all, and V. rigida only produced one baby last year. I know exactly how you feel about V. bon - I get seedlings everywhere!

Can't remember Geranium ...wasn't expecting them to flower until next year....I particularly grew them on to get a good root system before I planted them out
