I have read this week that T&M are now questioning whether Illumination is a true perennial as they have had reports of it not coming back. It reminded me that a forumite lost theirs, I have lost 2 of them, maybe we should let T&M know if anyone else has lost one.

I had three last year Rosie but only one came through the winter, it has flowered but not as well as it did last year. In my view they are not fully hardy.

I've tried growing them two years in succession, and mine certainly weren't perennials. I was very disappointed after all the 'hype'. My friend Eva has managed to keep hers, though...her garden seems to be very sheltered.

Not got D. Illumination but have noticed that some foxgloves seem to be biennial and others from the same parent plant seem perennial. It may be just a thing from open pollinated plants where some seedlings are biennial while others seem to be (short lived maybe) perennial. is 'Illumination' a seed raised plant(open pollinated) or a F1 hybrid?

I read that too rosie. It's not very good if it hasn't been trialled properly especially as this is supposed to be part of the reason they can charge higher prices for a new plant.

I think it's a hybrid between our native Foxglove and a related genus of shrubby foxgloves from milder climes called Isoplexis. Looks like this has unfortunately inherited the tender characteristics of it's tender parent! mygarden.rhs.org.uk/blogs/graham_rice/archive/2012/01/11/digitalis-illumination-new-from-thompson-amp-morgan.aspx

I've had 3 altogether...one I bought myself as a well established plant from a GC near me......it didn't get through the winter, and last year I had 2 on trial for T&M...One flowered earlier this year and when I trimmed back the spent stem It died on me. The other is hiding somewhere in the shrubbery under a tremendous growth on a clematis.....I will see what it has done when the clematis gets cut back....

I thought they would be OK here in the South so was disappointed when only one survived. The survivor had a small flower, nothing like the first year, and has since died. Will you be reporting your findings back to T&M?

Oh yes indeed........I will be letting them know. I think they have had reports back from other trial people....I think that's how the problem came to light....
