I have used Westland jacks magic this season and been extremely disappointed in it,found it dried out quick and didn't seem to have the 'compost' feel about it and gave me a average quality of plant root growth which didn't seem to knit together compared to some I grew with 'Erin' Would be good to get other views on composts other forum members use and get great results.

A lot of multi purpose composts are now "bulked out" with council compost, and there is no way of knowing what chemicals are in it.

This year I used clover multipurpose I liked it but found it looked dry is very light and friable . I previously have used Jack's magic and been very pleased. Also home base normal multipurpose and again very happy.
For the growing on with the dahlia cuttings I have used levington m3 professional I have to say very good.excellent root formation and plants look very healthy. I would like to try humax next year. Also the clover professional. Heard Erin is good.
I did use Jack's magic for the dahlia tubers and cannot Fault it the tubers threw shoots very very well.
I had alsways been a Westland man but got a couple of bags this year of the normal + John innes and was not that happy.
Will not use j Arthur Bowers again. Only will be the composted bark and manure from them or John innes no 3. Not there multipurpose.
I would also try the vitax. Heard good things about it . Most of these composts you have to order online no local stockists. You can find some good deals if you shop around.

I use Clover multi-purpose (as does the local plant nursery I get it from) and it's cheap when I get 12 bags delivered at once.
I've tried a few others which I didn't like but can't remember the names... I think one was J. Arthur Bowers as I remember the red bags. Yuck. Nasty sour stuff.

Bowers has definitely gone downhill, because it is very different now to a few years ago. Miracle Gro was cheap and good at the local garden centre so I went back for more.

I always stick with B&Q multi purpose. Its always good quality and I've never found rubbish or woody bits, I bought some vital earth peat free and there were small chunks of glass in it.

No woody bits but I found a large piece of Tuna fish tin about 3" x 2" a couple of years ago. Obviously got through somehow through the quality control check, the metal detector was not working that day.hehe

I tend to use what's on offer when I go the garden centre to be honest! From experience I think you can get good bags and bad bags no matter what you buy. I have had a Westland Multi Purpose compost bag that went off very quickly in the past once it was opened.
