I used J Arthur Bower's Masterblend compost this year which is peat based, no lumps or bits of wood. It costs more than their regular compost but worth it. Will definitely use again next year.

peony that is there new one supposed to be the best one they have done. Glad it has worked for you. I tried there traditional peat based potting compost it was nice. Got to much of it so will mix it with manure and use to mulch the beds. Hehehe

I got some very good results using a cheap compost from my local shop... I think it was called "Dunsters" or similar ? (I beleive I still have an empty bag knocking around somewhere... I'll check).
It is the best I've come across so far; no big lumps of wood, slightly most to the touch, and pretty much everything grew. It had lots of little white blobs inside that I beleive where some sort of slow-release plant food. At least, I HOPE thats what they where.
This year I'm on some generic stuff from Aldi, along with their generic bark mulch, just because it was cheap. Again, the general results thus far are pretty decent.
For seedlings, I use Wilko's cheap seedling compost !
