I was speaking to Lou at work the other day and both Lou and Brian mentioned they were looking for a columnar tree for a part of their garden. I'd mentioned a couple of my personal favourites but I said I'd put them on here. Sorry for being so late Lou

There's a lovely Oak, a cross between two of the white Oak group. The American White Oak and Our native English Oak have produced Quercus x 'Crimson Spire' ('Crimschmidt').

I like that 'Crimson Spire' oak Fractal . One of my favourites is Prunus 'Amanagowa' , I had one at our old house & have a 'baby' one here in a large pot at the moment.

I agree with you both grindle rosie they are really lovely. I like copper beech and purple maple but I'm not sure there are any of those types to fit in a small garden - I have two Acers in pots that I bought years ago in the death row department at B&Q - they were basically twigs one has grown into a fair size little tree - so not bad for £1.45 :-))

Oh very nice, I will keep these for future reference I'm also looking for a couple of small trees - to go in my sloping front lawn. Dwarf cherry or something. I might get away with that Sorbus actually.

Yes indeed, that Prunus 'Amanagowa' is a great tree too and should have been on this short list. Also great for clematis support for later colour.

Another pretty upright one for autumn colour is liquidambar 'Slender Silhouette' which I bought when we moved here, I'm hoping it will be O.K. as I've read they're frost hardy & O.K. in a sheltered spot so I hope we don't get any very bad winters.
