On the trunk of my acer there are what appear to be scale insects. I don't think it is woolly aphids but anyway I've had a look at various sprays which mention killing them but I seem to recall that their waxy outer coating protects them rendering contact sprays pretty useless. I think i heard somewhere that painting white spirit or something similar would do the trick but has anyone got a good way to get rid of them? Thanks

Meths works if there are only a few of them. Otherwise try a soap based spray. That gets rid of their waterproof coating so the insecticde can reach them. Or try soapy water and a scrubbing brush.

I've noticed some on mine too sweetpea if it's not too much trouble like on a very large tree then they do rub off very easy, bit messy though use something like the blunt side of a table knife, then spray what's left, I used Provado but if you don't like using chemicals then what's been mentioned is worth a try.......if left untreated though they do sap its strength

I'll get some meths (while wearing dark glasses and a hoodie) and scrub some on using a toothbrush and see how that goes.
