Today my job was to dig out this granite trough By lunchtime I had got this far The OH suggested an easier way to get it out. I wasn't convinced it would work but he swore it would, it didn't and I am now back at stage one. I spent the afternoon making a voodoo doll of the OH I could stick pins in That did make me laugh ;D

I knew that two jobs were lined up for today - firstly, to cut all the grass edges, then to weed the small circular beds (each has a tree in the middle). I did all that, and as I'd noticed some dead growth on the top of my Clematis cirrhosa 'Freckles' (from my bedroom window)I got the steps out yet again and tried to get rid of it.
It was a job and a half, balanced on the top step heaving dead strands out - but it looks a lot better now. Then I had time to go down to the 'crescent' which is the closest area to the stream, and I weeded and cleared the little border. The ferns in the dry stone wall are coming along nicely.

I've been filling gaps - and replacing the dead Euonymus lucidus with a hardy shrub - Lonicera involucrata. I'd never come across it before, but as it flowers for ages, it's probably a better shrub to have than the Euonymus, as its new growth kept getting nipped back by frost - then this winter killed it. I picked up the two additional Salvia pratensis, and now I have a group of three - I hope they'll look good in the top border.

I have pruned lots of roses and finished cutting out the honeysuckle climbers. They had gone mad so it looks quite a lot better. Now I have room for some clematis which are still in pots.

It does look a lovely granite planter though ;D If you look in the bottom left corner of the first photo you can see the end of a pipe. The trough is where the drain pipe has to go. I didn't really stick pins in the OH, after the initial shock of his plan going pear shaped I did see the funny side. Tomorrow I shall be back on the case Today I had a gentle day pricking out seedlings
