I was given some frog spawn a few months ago which I put into a pond shell that had filled with rain water. There was only four tadpoles left a month go, and then the water went greenish and I lost sight of them. I was delighted to see them swimming away at the top of the water today but surprised they are still the same sized tadpoles and haven't even grown legs yet I`d have thought they should be frogs by now? I had been feeding them a little fish flakes. How long does it take ? should I be doing something to help their development? any advise would be appreciated.

The tadpoles can take upto 3 months to develop, a lot can depend on the water temperatures, some will even go through the winter months before they change. I do not think you should be feeding them fish food, i do not think they would eat it and would pollute the water, they feed on algae and pond weed, they will eat nettles if dried and crushed into powder.

That's interesting about the nettles Tel. My tadpoles are still tadpoles with no sign of legs either. Merlin's have all turned into frogs.

Thanks Tel, I`ll not feed them again , there is plenty of algae now though the water is much clearer at the surface. Glad to know I`m not the only one waiting expectantly for frogs WLF
