I know of a gardening friend who has successfully germinated seeds, not really thinking they'd take but they have ! Result ..... some little trees in need of a good large home !

They can be kept small quite easily.

Indeed, they respond well to clipping. This is specifically the species called the Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) as apposed to the Wellingtonia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) which can still be pruned selectively but doesn't respond quite so well as the former.

Umm ...... the person who's got this called it his 'giant Sequoia' so that sounds like the bigger one. Steve's got the guys details so we'll soon see what happens next.

Here is somemore info for anyone interested .......
just weighed them, they're actually only between 170 and 300 g. That's from £1.09 to £2.46 by 1st class post. I can supply photos if your friend's still interested, as I say they're not in the best condition because they're root bound and also they've probably taken all they could from their compost by now. But by not best condition I actually mean they're a bit yellow and there's an odd dry twig. The ones that I planted out were the same, now they're in soil, after only 2-3 months they are dark green again and springing new twigs.
I also have a few Picea Glauca seedlings, those are about 10 cm tall and 3 or 4 years old, can't remember exactly. They look nice and healthy. They'd all be £2.46 to post as they have a bit more compost in their pots. The only thing is, I hear glaucas grown from seed don't always turn blue when mature.
This is from the guy who's got them, talking to me.
