we have 2 rabbits Poppy and Hunny both happy outside on the grass in a large run. the eldest girl has 2 roborosky hamsters and the youngest has 2 gerbils.
word of warning however. we buy hay for bedding for them and some had tick eggs on it. both gerbils are now heavily infested and both child and me have been badly bitten. we are off to the drs on tuesday for an id of tick and blood tests to make sure we are not infected with anything.

Oh god, Sonic (hedgehog) had one a few weeks back (picked it up outside as i use shreaded paper for his bed) the Rabbit has straw and sawdust. Have you used anything to treat the animals? you can get a spot on for small animals from Ebay, dry penny royal in your baths may help.

that's a sweet bunny Floydie There's a plague of ticks here too, especially on the moors, we walked yesterday and didn't even get onto the moor and Dylan picked one up, fortunately I saw it just as it was crawling up his coat, I hate the things

Thanks for the warning Seaburn, we use straw for the chooks, not sure if they wouldn't eat the ticks though, they'll eat anything! Organophosphates are not nice at all and I don't think it's used now, hope we don't get a plague of tics now! We'll check-out Barnaby every time we come home from a walk in the countryside. Does anyone know if todays sheep-dip is as effective as organophosphates were?

That's a good site, Floydie. As kids we too were brought up with a lot of pets - cats, dogs, hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits - my mother had a large garden and an equally large pond so there were lots of fish, frogs and toads (despite the cats!!!) around too ;D I have very fond memories of that garden We had a large coal bunker and various pets explored that place !

Our guinea pigs used to have the run of the garden and they kept the grass down and fertilised it at the same time. very useful little things. The cats didn't bother them in the slightest. Funny thing though, we had a Schefflera in the porch and when they were running around indoors they chomped all the lower leaves of it.

sorting the animals isnt a probem its what we need to do to combat any infections we may have got from the ticks. We are both at the drs tomorrow.
