We noticed that a pair of House Martins are starting to build a nest on the side of our house, isn't it a bit late to be doing this? I would have thought it would be too late in the year for a brood now. I will take a photo this afternoon.

Yes Rosie, I would have though far too late. Even an established nest (which can have a second brood) would be pushing it now. Something has gone drastically wrong with an established breeding pair recently. They may raise chicks but unfortunately the insect population may drop rapidly (depending on the summer) so its completely up in the air. The parents instinct to migrate will kick in eventually too so may be abandoned?

Graham took this about an hour ago, they are still building away merrily.

It gives them something to do I suppose. I hope they don't get caught out with the weather.

I thought our resident swallows had gone but they are still around and apparently roosting in the shed where the nest is. no sign of any activity at the nest but this morning when I went to get something from the shed, one flew out while I was still in the doorway.

Our swallows are around as well - they had three babies. The nest was on the light fitting in our log shed! I think it was the second brood, though. It's lovely to watch them swooping around.

We have swarms of insects and millions of flying ants, but none of the sort of birds which eat these things.
Also the wasps are going funny too. They are very angry and have completely changed, so the mole (wasp) man is coming tonight to deal with them. I am not normally a wimp and have got rid of one nest myself, but my husband has been stung four times and they followed him in.
The flying ants are leaving the ground in clouds. You feel as if you can breathe them in. Where are the birds?
