I agree with Louise...if you don't have the cash, well you can't spend it...I'm sure your family will appreciate the predicament you are in....tell them as soon as possible that there will be nothing or little this year......then you won't spend the next few months worrying about it.......that applies to your friends as well....they will probably be relieved you said somthing!!......your own children come first

I am sure your family and friends will already know what the money situation is like, so should come has no surprise to them that you will not be buying for them this year. You cannot spend what you do not have and Christmas is not worth the worry of getting into debt over.

I agree with everything that has been said, Christmas is not worth getting into debt for, if you feel that you would like to give to close family, how about making or growing something, the thought that goes into a gift like that is so much nicer to receive. It's the thought that counts and the fun you can have while doing it, not the amount of ££'s that are spent.

Whatsmore, i like, and do, give presents which are 'time'. Some older people have no interest in a material gift - they've got everything they want and need and to them time spent with them is so precious ..... give parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents etc. the gift of your time - likewise your children .... let their gift to your relatives be days spent alone with them. The children could make a little card with it all written out nicely, the crucial thing here is that YOU MUST carry through the gift and not just pay lipservice to them, because that's just insulting. I've given this kind of gift to people for a few years now and it's a lovely one to give and a really meaningful one to receive

Christmas presents They're a pain I enjoy giving them but why do people always say "Oh you shouldn't have bothered" It's very hurtful I'm not bothering this year so we'll see what they've got to say about that

However, it did make me laugh.

We shall just have to see how far the money will go, our kids and dogs come first (i always get the dogs a bit of something or they feel left out in all the excitement) then OH, my parents, his parents and family's kids, i cannot see money stretching past that but if we've got anything spare everyone else will end up with Chocs or smellies. I only have my nan and ants nan who are older family members, i will go to see my nan and we will see OH's nan over xmas too I will make sure they get some nice smellies.

We decided a couple of years ago - after talking to our Sons- that we would only buy for the Grandchildren now - as both of us are now pensioners. We just love being together which is more important than the things money can buy! As Louise says Time is the most important present you can give to someone I love looking after our Grandchildren and it doesn't cost anything - apart from all the food they eat - with their hollow legs ;D ;D ;D

We have 12 grandchildren and one pension. Maybe Floydie can put it into perspective for us.

Hywel, I don 't think that has come out right. Are you pleased about the one pension (my husband's) or about the 12 grandchildren, or even that Floydie might make me feel better? I am a foreigner you see, had three children and then my husband's two, one of whom was imposed on me by the court.
