I remember being told about him when i was a child .... Well now, in this town, we have a man with a pick-up who uses a loud speaker (sets all the dogs barking ) to call out that he's collecting "Any old metal" ..... a variation on the "Any old iron" !!!!! He's been around ever since the beginning of the year.

I am not surprised they want old metal, apparently scrap metal gets a good price just now ;D I remember the rag and bone man in Newcastle too, and Eddie the coal man and the milk man

There's one that comes round here occasionally. It sounds like he's saying "Yup Yup Yup Yuuuuuuuup!!" I remember them with a horse and cart too, and my dad running up the street after them with a shovel lol. You'd think he was a keen gardener but he wasn't.

I always used to go out to our rag & bone man when I was little with any little scrap of cloth I could persuade my mum to part with, you used to get tea cups, balloons, goldfish, all sorts of things off him. Now we have several driving around here, some who shout 'Any old scrap', 'Any old iron' & one who has a full P.A. system that plays music (La Cucaracha on the trumpet!) & then he lists everything he wants!

They come around here on a regular basis. They were very happy to take my clapped out tumbler dryer a few months ago. It saved us the hassle of taking it to the tip or waiting for the council to collect it.

I do remember the ones coming round when I was a girl, I always hankered after a goldfish but wasn't allowed to have one

We contact one in the next village when we need him. There was one here a few weeks ago who went back to a house and helped himself to the things which he was told not to take. There is now a big farm gate across the top of this lady's drive. This place was a bit slummy when we came here and it is beautiful now.

Ah, so there are a few around then, i'm not surprised because as Rosie said, the cost of scrap has been increasing for a while now.
