I am going to buy some Provado Haven't you had it before Esther? It has to be done or lilies get lost to the red blighters completely. However, some lilies don't seem to suffer with lily beetles.

I don't use Provado, it's implicated in the decline of bees, so I just squish the beetles, eggs & grubs but if you've got a lot then I can see that might not be practical. Found my first lily beetle of the season the other day, munching on one of the snakeshead fritillaries in the ront garden, it dropped off onto the path & is now an ex-beetle! ;D

I did not know this Sue, but I suppose lots of sprays are bad for bees. I only need to spray lily beetle, and can't say I have noticed many bees on the lilies. In fact, my neighbour had to sell two hives last summer because they were doing so well.

I don't know whether its better than Tumblebug because I've never used that Cherry, but I know Provado Ultimate Bug Killer works on lily beetles so that's what I use. I only spray the lillies which have beetles on them (the Turk's cap type don't seem to attract them). This worked well last year. I also pick off and squish any that I spot

Thanks Peony. These products are so expensive, that experience can be useful.

If anyone is against using insecticide, there is one way of stopping the beetle of climbing up your lilies. A ring of vaseline round the lower part of the stem may stop them it works with the earwigs on dahlias.
