Hello, Have one of these tress growing quite close to house and wandered if anyone could positively id it ? Also what would be the best time to prune it ? Wanted to keep it in check before it comes a problem. There is not a single trunk but three of equal size coming from the base. Thinking of trimming a bit off the tops and sides at the ends and wnadered what time best time to do this is ? Many thanks, Lawrence

I've never seen a Liquidambar all the same colour at once, I've seen Maples that colour, could we see a close up of the leaves?

If the leaves are opposite it is an Acer. If they are offset against each side of the branch it is a Liquidambar. I can't really tell from your pic. However, looking at the ends of the branches, I think it could be Liquidambar.

Must admit I thought Acer straight away (palmatum atropurpureum?) If it is then they don't like pruning much while in active growth as they tend to bleed sap, should be able to tidy it over soon though

Yes, this is definitely a Japanese Maple and I think Steve is correct with the variety too. It looks exactly right for 'Atropurpureum'.

Many thanks for all quick replies, adding a couple of leaf pictures in case it clinches it one way or another, only noticed when taking the pictures some sort of seeds in places that can be seen in second picture.... Many thanks, Lawrence

Many thanks for all your replies, seems I have a Acer Atropurpureum (japanese maple). Reading on the web seems they are fairly slow growing and don't get to a massive size and suggestions seem to be keep pruning to a minimum ( iwas worried it was going to get out of hand quickly like my eucalyptus). Also seems that any pruning should be done in winter (Nov to early Feb)when dormant to stop sap bleeding.
Trying to create a plan of my garden (very new to this) with what every plant is and when they need care.
Many thanks,
Lawrence
