They will have taken this back to feed their grubs (probably new Queens) in the nest.

They were moving so I could not count the wings. The whole bodies were red.

We had one like that in the front garden last week but I didn't get a photo of it because I hadn't seen it resting in the bushes until I walked up & startled it.
