Not sure how it died but wasps had eaten into the thorax that house the wing muscles. They will have taken this back to feed their grubs (probably new Queens) in the nest.

There were two red damselflies or dragonflies here today. They were moving so I could not count the wings. The whole bodies were red.

Aren't those wings intricate? It is not often you can study one so closely.

Poor thing, they are beautiful aren't they, lovely photos. We had one like that in the front garden last week but I didn't get a photo of it because I hadn't seen it resting in the bushes until I walked up & startled it.
